How can I deal with serious co-parenting issues?

Seeing eye-to-eye with your ex when it comes to co-parenting can be a challenging issue. In some cases, you may feel as though you’re at your wit’s end when struggling to find common ground. There are a number of sticky co-parenting scenarios you’re bound to face, and each one of them will have its own challenges to navigate. That’s why Very Well Family offers the following advice on some common co-parenting woes.

Conflicts about schoolwork

Homework is a common source of conflict in most households, especially when one parent is less strict than the other. If you’re concerned your ex-spouse does not have the same level of commitment when it comes to schoolwork, try to think about the big picture. Are your kids turning in work on time, and are they receiving reasonable grades on assignments? If so, your ex’s tactics may not be so bad. If there are issues with schoolwork, ask your ex to attend a meeting at your kids’ school so he or she can understand why education is so important.

Disputes over child support payments

Child support decisions are made by the court based on a number of factors, such as the income of both parents. When the non-custodial parent refuses to pay, it is a serious issue for the court to handle. In some cases, you can pursue a modification of the original order, which is usually necessary when your ex has experienced a loss of employment. If your former partner still refuses to pay, the court will pursue legal options like wage garnishment or even jail time.

Disrespect of boundaries

Some exes use bullying tactics to get their way. It can be hard facing down a bully, but remember that you’re allowed to make decisions on behalf of your kids as well. If your ex is pressuring you to go along, say that you need time to think about what’s being requested. This will allow you to formulate a reasonable response while also rending from power away from your ex by creating your own timeline. Of course, if your ex uses forceful language or threats of violence to make you comply, it’s time to discuss legal options with your attorney ASAP.
